Chapter 11 : Appendices.

11.1. Additional WinDi screens.

WinDi Dictionaries : other layouts.

In order to select one of the available layouts of the dictionary, click on the small 's' button (at the right bottom of the screen). Please note that the program selects the right presentation at the first execution, according to your hardware (screen) possibilities. In order to get the largest layout, you need a screen resolution of at least 800 x 600 pixels.

Bilingual layout.

Multilingual layout, 'all-in-one' screen (available only with a min. screen resolution of 800 x 600)

Agreements in gender and number.

This screen can be accessed from within Screen 2 of WinDi Dictionaries, when it is open on a noun, adjective, or preposition. Click on the 'books' icon at the bottom left corner to obtain a similar screen, that allows you to build simple 'subjects' or 'complements' directly in the dictionaries. This screen gives you access to billions of combination possibilities.

11.2 Tower of Babel?

Everybody has to deal with the Tower of Babel situation on a daily basis. Indeed, the language barrier is an important limit to economic and industrial expansion; many companies have very advanced technology, but have difficulties exporting their products because of problems related to understanding, and communication problems.

In the past, when it was necessary to telephone one's addressees in other countries, or write to them, there was no other choice than to limit oneself to the use of a few hundreds of words. This led to reduced communication efficiency and, as a consequence, to unexpected reductions in export turnover.

That time is now over. Indeed, as everybody knows, there are now new computer means of communication.

What are they? First of all, there is a telecommunications revolution in progress: international phone calls will become less frequent, being progressively replaced in most cases by 'text' communications (fax, Internet, etc). Of course, this does not in itself provide a solution to language problems. But it is in this medium that the WinDi tools can play an essential role. Language Dynamics supplies a range of translation tools that will allow the language barrier problem to be overcome, which means the Tower of Babel will be surmounted.

Our tools allow you to work with a large standardized vocabulary. Communication improves in quality and efficiency!

Thanks to all the WinDi tools, it will no longer be necessary to work with a 'limited' vocabulary simply because one doesn't know the target language very well. WinDi gives on-line access to a standardized vocabulary of more than 40,000 words (more than 3,350,000 grammatical examples of use are available), signifying a real linguistic revolution.

In the long term, two companies in two different countries (or even two continents) using the same translation tool will use the same vocabulary, thus guaranteeing perfect understanding between the partners. The vocabulary available is very extensive, thus permitting communication of high quality, where each user can find the right word, and doesn't have to restrict his vocabulary to words like 'put' or 'get', which are not always very precise.

The final conclusion of this translation help, integrated into the everyday work, is that people will be able to learn languages in a soft and friendly way while they are working. They will even be able to reuse their new linguistic knowledge when a phone call or a video conference proves it necessary. This new skill is one of the leitmotivs of the WinDi project, which covers three aspects: translation help help in understanding, and language learning.

11.3 WinDi helps you to learn foreign languages.

The WinDi software answers three particular needs: translation help, understanding help, and help to learn foreign languages. This document has been written in order to explain how to use WinDi within the framework of language learning.

Each 'WinDi' module can help to learn a foreign language, and namely:

- The WinDi dictionary displays seven languages on the screen, which allows to clearly identify the language 'families'and the influences that they have had on each other. In the same context, the grammatical comments are most complete, and absolutely needed when learning grammar (for example: gender of nouns, irregularity of verbs, definite article in front of the noun, etc.)

- The conjugation program provides complete data on the screen, and shows the conjugation of each verb without abbreviations, in active and passive voice. The right auxiliaries are automatically chosen, the separable particles (in Dutch and German) are clearly indicated, etc.

- WinDi allows to compare, from a 'reference' language, the conjugation of a verb in 2 or 6 languages.

- The text-to-speech module offers an initiating approach to the pronunciation of the studied language.

The 'WinDi Direct Translation' sentence translation module is particularly useful to learn languages, in different ways:

- This program presents, for example, the concrete use of grammatical rules, as the location of words, the agreements of past participles, how to create negations or questions, the use of pronouns, etc.

- As all the grammatical problems included in the proposed sentences are managed by the software, the teacher might imagine a dialogue between the student and him/her, in relation to the different grammar points seen in particular sentences. For example : identify and justify the use of a German declension, the agreement in gender and number of a French or Italian past participle, etc. There are many grammatical rules in WinDi that provide, for example, interesting revision supports.

- The students can create a sentence in the language they learn, while 'hiding' the translation being executed in their mother tongue. When they are finished, they will check in their mother language if the translation is correct. If the result is good in their mother tongue, then the source sentence (created from the studied language) is correct, too.

On-the-job learning is one of the key aspects of the WinDi translation help softwares:

Indeed, when a multilingual person works in a team, this person is often 'disturbed' by his/her colleagues for different translation needs: a word, a sentence, a conjugation. This person spends much of his/her time answering these questions. WinDi allows to solve this problem, while being immediately available to everyone.

In some cases, people may hesitate to inform themselves, if they don't know a translation, whether by shyness or by fear of showing a lack of knowledge in the needed language; they will then try to reformulate their meaning in a different way, which will take time and diminish the communication efficiency. In this case, WinDi is a precious tool as well.

11.4 WinDi Product History.

The WinDi project celebrates its 10th birthday!

The feasibility study of the WinDi project has been made mid 1989 and as a conclusion, the development was launched end of 1989, with the production of the multilingual database (dictionary). Initially the major European languages were selected: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Dutch. Portuguese was added later (mid-1996). It appears today that the WinDi software is the only tool covering all these 7 languages so comprehensively!

A clear orientation was chosen from the start: the database would be completely multidirectional. Therefore, the dictionary was conceived by teams of native speakers working together, in order to prevent any mistranslations.

For reasons of efficiency and reliability, we chose to indicate all the necessary grammatical comments for each word (irregular verb, gender of the nouns, etc.). MS Windows was the platform chosen for obvious reasons of market share. The 'WinDi Dictionary' package was released in December '93.

The 'WinDi Tools' package was the next to be developed. This package allows more than 10,000 verbs per language to be conjugated, and also the WinDi Dictionaries database to be enlarged. This development was in response to many enquiries from end-users. The 'WinDi Tools' package was released in mid-1994, and sold independently of the WinDi Dictionaries.

Then, we chose to merge all these translation help modules into a single all-in-one package, 'WinDi Translation Help', which met the market demand. This package featured 2 new modules, the first being called 'WinDi On Line', allowing users to get the translation of a word by simply clicking on it. The second new module was 'Voice for WinDi', resulting from a collaboration with Creative Labs, and providing text-to-speech in four languages (English, French, German, Spanish).

The 'WinDi Translation Help' package was released in April 1995, and presented for the first time in the US marketplace at the Comdex Spring show in Atlanta (24-27 April 95), where it received an enthusiastic welcome.

A few months earlier, our most ambitious linguistic development yet was being launched: the 'WinDi Direct Translation' project, allowing complete sentences to be translated. This project was born to complete our 'Word-by-word' translation (WinDi Translation/Understanding Help).

At the time, automatic translators available on the market claimed that they could translate any kind of text reliably and accurately. However, what they actually provide are draft translations that can never be used directly without verification.

We then made up our minds to produce a highly interactive translator, providing high-quality translations that could be used in international communications, without having to resort to professional translators (except for legal contracts, advertisement, or similar binding or 'cultural' literature). As the database had been conceived according to a 'multidirectional' concept, we made use of this asset to develop a sentence translation tool working from and to any of the 7 languages.

When a sentence is translated into one target language, the translation is immediately available in the other 6 languages! The new 'WinDi Direct Translation' was included in the 'WinDi Translation Help' package as a beta version in November 1995, and was unveiled for the first time at Comdex Fall, Las Vegas (13-17 November 95). The 'WinDi Direct Translation' commercial version was released for the first time in the 1997 packaged version.

The 'WinDi Direct Translation' module was, and still is, unique on the market. Its linguistic qualities impressed many people, from 'mere' users to professional linguists who had already worked on translation projects. The new 'WinDi Translation Help' package, with all its modules, meets three particular needs as far as foreign communication is concerned: help in understanding, translation help, and language-learning help.

The free dictionary updating policy (via download on our WEB site) was launched on the third quarter of 1998. Following to the success of this download possibility, we have decided beginning 1999 to deliver WinDi only via download. In this strategy, we have added a demonstration version running on a single PC or on a network. On top of this, we also offer a limited WinDi FreeWare version to be downloaded from our WEB site!

The WinDi Browser program was added into the WinDi package in June 1999. This WEB application required the design of 2 new programs : DICWEB.EXE and GRAMMAR.EXE. The first program is the interface between WinDi and the HTML world. The second displays on screen the agreements in gender and number of nouns and adjectives if asked by the user. The conjugation program (CONJUG.EXE) and the word compiler (WINDIGW.EXE) were adapted to be integrated into WinDi Browser. All this makes WinDi Browser a very ambitious and complex project, namely DICWEB.EXE that includes indispensable parsing.

In September 1999 we finished the database development of the plurals and feminines of nouns and adjectives. This development concerned about 25.000 words per language that have been reviewed one by one in order to define the agreement rules and all their exceptions. The major part of this job was to retrieve the feminine of the person nouns (in 7 languages). This work took more than 3 years starting in 1996... These functions simply doubled WinDi's possibilities while giving to the user a linguistic service which is unique and cannot be found anywhere else !

The version you have installed is then :

WinDi Phase I

Altogether, all these developments and database designs took about 10 years and the adding of the plurals and feminines closes the first phase of the WinDi project... You have understood that WinDi is a long-term project and thanks to the current achievements, we are ready now (October 1999) to launch the second phase which is scheduled over a minimum period of 3-4 years...

Many thanks to 93 collaborators!
